A wry, savvy novel of untidy modern relationships, A Family Affair confirms award-winning author Nadine Bismuth’s place as a remarkable chronicler of contemporary middle-class mores in the manner of Jonathan Franzen, John Irving, and Lorrie Moore. Award-winning novelist and screenwriter for film and television Nadine Bismuth has returned with an unsparing portrait of twenty-first century life. In A Family Affair, love is the first casualty and deceit — towards others, towards oneself — the norm. Kitchen designer Magalie is being cheated upon and so cheats in turn, in the office and with a divorced police officer who has hired her. Her partner, Mathieu, has no idea how to be, and the police officer Guillaume no idea what he wants. So begins a story of messy relationships wrested against the odds from the detritus of failed marriages, the demands of professional lives, and the pull of the internet and its false messages of perfection. With an assiduous eye that is both clinical and sympathetic, Bismuth’s elegant and highly readable novel captures the alienating nature of contemporary life and sheds light on this, our strange new world full of unrequited yearning in a sea of seeming plenty.

Heartache. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Redemption. It’s time to head back to Magdalena, New York, and spend a little time with the people we love to love and even a few we love to hate. Gina Servetti was raised to believe she wasn’t enough—not thin enough, not pretty enough, not clever enough. She’s more comfortable with a spreadsheet than a conversation and doesn’t trust easily, especially where men are concerned, most notably the good-looking, smooth-talking ones like Ben Reed. When city boy Ben Reed arrives in Magdalena, he’s not planning a long-term stay in a town filled with too many busybodies and too little excitement. He just needs things to settle down in Philly for a few months before he returns to his old life and his plan to win back his ex-wife. But once he gets to know the people in this town, he starts to care about them: one in particular—Gina Servetti. The longer he’s around her, the more he realizes she’s so much more than a woman with a scowl and a sharp tongue. She’s real and honest, and as afraid of trusting as he is. But can Ben and Gina open up and take a risk for a chance at real love? Well, if the rest of the town has anything to say about it, and they always do, this couple will take the big leap and end with an “I do”! And would the story be complete without checking in on Harry Blacksworth’s latest debacle…ahem…adventure? Harry’s moved his brood to Magdalena and is taking advice but, thankfully, not fashion lessons from Pop Benito. That spells trouble on so many levels. Oh, but it’s going to be interesting… Join me as we peek into the lives of some of our favorites: Pop Benito, Lily, Nate and Christine Desantro, Harry and Greta Blacksworth, Mimi Pendergrass, Bree Kinkaid…and many more. Heartache. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Redemption. It’s time to head back to Magdalena, New York, and spend a little time with the people we love to love and even a few we love to hate. Eight years ago, tragedy struck the town’s perfect couple, Daniel “Cash” Casherdon and Tess Carrick, days before their wedding. That tragedy shredded their dreams of a life together and sent them fleeing Magdalena. Now, destiny has brought them back and the town is determined to see this couple mend their differences. Angelo “Pop” Benito will lead the crusade to march Cash and Tess down the aisle with the help of The Bleeding Hearts Society, a garden group more interested in healing people’s hearts than helping a sick basil plant. But they’re not the only ones cheering for this couple’s second chance. Who would have thought Nate Desantro would be giving advice on relationships, love, and marriage? But when a man finds the right woman, anything is possible. Add a baby to the mix; well, that’s pure “hero” material. Christine will offer her share of support and wisdom to Tess and stand up to an old troublemaker in the name of family and friendship. From the fifty-something widow who is afraid to open her heart again to the pregnant friend who believes everyone has a soul mate, to Lily Desantro, the shining light who makes others believe anything is possible, Magdalena’s finest will rally to give Tess and Cash that second chance. But all the prayers and contrivances in the world won’t help until Tess reveals the secret she’s carried for too many years, a secret that could destroy her chance with Cash forever… And if you’re wondering about Harry Blacksworth and his brood, you’ll glimpse a snippet of what he’s up to, but he’ll be back in full force in A Family Affair: Fall. Not only that—he’s moving to Magdalena with Greta and the kids! Can you imagine Harry maneuvering a lawnmower or carrying out the trash? Oh, but his past is going to catch up with him and then…Sorry…Harry has to wait for A Family Affair: Fall to share his misery and his story. This early work by Guy de Maupassant was originally published in the 1880's. Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil, near Dieppe, France. He came from a prosperous family, but when Maupassant was eleven, his mother risked social disgrace by trying to secure a legal separation from her husband. After the split, Maupassant lived with his mother till he was thirteen, and inherited her love of classical literature. In 1880, Maupassant published his first – and, according to many, his best – short story, entitled 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'). It was an instant success. He went on to be extremely prolific during the 1880s, working methodically to produce up to four volumes of short fiction every year. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Can her free-spirited ways fit into his plan? Radford Keller is a successful businessman who sees life as a corporation. He’s guided by structure, facts, and deadlines. He has no time or interest in concepts like serendipity, destiny, or ever-after. In fact, he doesn’t believe they exist. Marisela Ricci is a talented, kind-hearted free spirit with an unfortunate past that’s left her filled with self-doubt and an inability to commit to long term or anything resembling a plan. And relationships? Too much hurt, too much exposure. Not happening. Ever. They’re from different worlds but they share one very strong common interest—Radford’s Aunt Lina. Lina Keller has lived in the small town of Magdalena, New York, for over fifty years but she’s known her share of heartache, loss, and the repercussions of not taking a chance. That’s why she’s determined that the two people who mean the most to her—her city-boy nephew and the woman who’s like a daughter to her—don’t experience those same mistakes. She devises a twenty-one-day list that will force them to work together, develop new skills, and maybe learn about each other. Will they want to do it? Of course not. Will they do it for her? Absolutely. And perhaps what they’ll discover along the way will change how they view each other, the world, and their take on commitment and happily-ever-after. What happens when the twenty-one-day list is completed? Well, that depends on them, with a little help from the residents of Magdalena...

It was only supposed to be a simple arrangement—until emotions got in the way. Now lies and secrets could destroy everything. Lawson Carlisle, the ostracized black sheep of the wealthy Carlisle family is back in Magdalena. It’s been sixteen years since he left, vanishing one night amidst speculations that included jail time and detention homes. Those were serious claims against one of the wealthiest families in town, and whether those stories were true or not, they fueled many a conversation and served as a lesson to the community; no person is invincible, no matter how much money his family has. Ava Marie Ventori used to believe that doing good and following rules would gift her with the life she wanted, the man she loved, the dreams she didn’t even know she craved. But her eagerness to find that perfect life landed her with the wrong man, the wrong career path, and the wrong dreams. At thirty-three, the jobs are meaningless, the relationships nonexistent, and the dreams are gone. Her one joy is painting river rocks with inspirational messages, but she’s not about to share their existence, especially with the parents she continues to disappoint. After a chance encounter with former classmate, good-girl Ava Maire Ventori, Law offers her the use of his cabin—no strings attached—so she can work on the mystery art she obviously doesn’t want to share. But his “no strings” good intentions are no match for old-fashioned attraction... As Law and Ava spend time together, she discovers there’s so much more to the former bad-boy than a questionable past and he starts to believe that maybe Ava isn’t too good for him. In fact, maybe she’s perfect for him. When lies and old secrets threaten the couple’s happiness, will their love be strong enough to fight for a life together? While A Family Affair: The Proposal can be read as a stand-alone story, readers have fallen in love with the entire series!

A searingly powerful memoir about the impact of addiction on a family. In the summer of 2012 a woman named Eva was found dead in the London townhouse she shared with her husband, Hans K. Rausing. The couple had struggled with drug addiction for years, often under the glare of tabloid headlines. Now, writing with singular clarity and restraint, Hans’ sister, the editor and publisher Sigrid Rausing, tries to make sense of what happened. In Mayhem, she asks the difficult questions those close to the world of addiction must face. “Who can help the addict, consumed by a shaming hunger, a need beyond control? There is no medicine: the drugs are the medicine. And who can help their families, so implicated in the self-destruction of the addict? Who can help when the very notion of ‘help’ becomes synonymous with an exercise of power; a familial police state; an end to freedom, in the addict’s mind?” An eloquent and timely attempt to understand the conundrum of addiction—and a memoir as devastating as it is riveting.

Serving as a source of parental support, this book provides a range of imaginative and effective suggestions for dealing with each family member in ways that nourish self-esteem for all involved. Strong self-esteem is a critical ingredient for human happiness--and its development begins at home in the nurturing interactions between children and adults. Clarke's unique approach to building self-esteem begins with her belief that this is indeed a "family affair." Rather than offering collection of dictatorial "should," Self-Esteem: A Family Affair instead serves as a source of parental support, providing a broad range of imaginative and effective suggestions for dealing with individual family members in ways that nourish self-esteem for all involved.Throughout her book, Clarke encourages parents to claim their strengths and to trust their judgment as they make decisions about appropriate child care. Recognizing, too, that kids' needs are best met by adults whose own needs have not been neglected, Clarke offers a range of creative and workable options for parents to build the self-esteem of children while also caring for their emotional needs.Jean Illsley Clarke, author of Hazelden's Growing Up Again: Parenting Ourselves, Parenting Our Children, is a writer and an internationally recognized parent educator who specializes in the areas of parenting, self-esteem, family dynamics, and adult children of alcoholics. She currently directs the Self-Esteem Center, which she founded in 1975, and lives in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Heartache. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Redemption... It's time to head back to Magdalena, New York, and spend a little time with the people we love to love and even a few we love to hate. A lot has happened since readers left town in A Family Affair: Winter! Bree Kinkaid is dealing with heartache and betrayal the only way she can—denial. Her friends can’t help her, she won’t listen to her parents, and she rejects offerings of support and sympathy from the town as she attempts to hold onto that magical life she wanted. But when a stranger shows up at Bree’s doorstep with information about her husband, she can’t pretend any longer. And in case you were wondering what happened to Gloria Blacksworth’s notebook, it’s still resting in Nate Desantro’s desk drawer…but not for long. Gloria might be dead, but the notebook continues to leak distrust and ill will into the community, and someone’s got to stop it! There might be only one person in town equipped for the job—any guesses? We’ve also got a new man in Magdalena, one badly in need of a second chance… Grant Richot sprinted through life, a boy wonder with talent, intelligence, confidence, and charm. He never doubted the world awaited him, just as he never doubted the right woman would come into his life—but only when he was ready for her. Anyone before that was simply preparation for the one. How wrong he was. Years and a tragedy later, Grant arrives in Maggie Finnegan’s hometown of Magdalena, New York—broken, uncertain, and searching for that second chance with the woman he cast aside. But Maggie’s no longer naïve and impressionable; she’s a confident, competent widow with a child, who has more at risk than another broken heart… Note: For a richer “A Family Affair” reading experience, make sure to read Pulling Home, Book One of That Second Chance series. It is the prequel to A Family Affair: The Promise, where you’ll learn Grant Richot’s story. The decades between the close of World War I and the end of the Thatcher era have changed and challenged family life in England dramatically. The Depression and World War II shifted priorities and behaviour, as did the Welfare State, the Pill and Women's Lib later on. What threatened a family's respectability in the 1920s is often commonplace today - abortion, contraception, the single parent family, or gay relationships. Family Affairs explores the secret life of English families from 1920 to 1990. Mary Abbott takes the reader into her subjects' homes and hearts and provokes readers to reflect on families past and speculate on families future. A product of intense original research of primary and secondary sources, this volume is a useful contribution to the history of the family.

From one of America’s greatest comic novelists, a hilarious new novel about aging, family, loneliness, and love The Bergman clan has always stuck together, growing as it incorporated in-laws, ex-in-laws, and same-sex spouses. But families don’t just grow, they grow old, and the clan’s matriarch, Joy, is not slipping into old age with the quiet grace her children, Molly and Daniel, would have wished. When Joy’s beloved husband dies, Molly and Daniel have no shortage of solutions for their mother’s loneliness and despair, but there is one challenge they did not count on: the reappearance of an ardent suitor from Joy’s college days. And they didn’t count on Joy herself, a mother suddenly as willful and rebellious as their own kids. The New York Times–bestselling author Cathleen Schine has been called “full of invention, wit, and wisdom that can bear comparison to [ Jane] Austen’s own” (The New York Review of Books), and she is at her best in this intensely human, profound, and honest novel about the intrusion of old age into the relationships of one loving but complicated family. They May Not Mean To, But They Do is a radiantly compassionate look at three generations, all coming of age together.
